In 1971 a series of hill top tombs were discovered in the city of Changsha in China’s Hunan province, along with other major findings within the tombs, was evidence of 5 different systems of a heat based medical theory, that later went on to be known as “The Mawangdui Medical Manuscripts”. These texts date back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-25 A.D), and the significance of these classical discoveries was proof, the ancient Chinese had a sophisticated knowledge of heat-based therapy. It also indicates that Moxibustion was being practiced well before the discovery of these tombs, making it without doubt one of the oldest medical disciplines we know of.

The common element used for Moxibustion is a wool like tinder made from a plant called Artemisia Vulgaris / Mugwort or Yomogi in Japanese. The art of moxibustion is based on the same principles as acupuncture, moxa is used to maintain equilibrium, by stimulating the free movement and quality of Qi (vital energy), Blood and body fluids within the channels and the organism. In the clinical setting, Moxibustion is unique in that, when used in the correct manner by a skilled practitioner it has profound health benefits and versatility. Moxa can be used to tonify deficiency and warm cold, and to disperse heat and excess conditions like inflammation and swelling.

It is also used to move local stagnation caused by sprain, strain and injury, there by decreasing both acute and chronic pain. Finally Moxa has a dynamic effect on Blood and plays a major role when treating issues related to  women’s health. Koten Acupuncture Gold Coast is a specialty Acupuncture and Moxibustion clinic, drawing on advanced moxa techniques to compliment each Acupuncture treatment and optimize clinical outcomes for all conditions.
