A study published in the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism concluded that low frequency electro-acupuncture improved menstrual frequency and balanced sex steroid levels in women with PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The study randomized 84 women with PCOS aged between 18 to 37 years of age, to a 16 wk course of low-frequency Electro Acupuncture, physical exercise, or no intervention at all. The focus was to measure the outcomes and changes in the concentration of total testosterone (T) at week 16 from baseline. Secondary outcome measures were changes in menstrual frequency; concentrations of androgens, estrogens, androgen precursors, and Glucuronidated androgen metabolites; and acne and Hirsutism (abnormal hair growth).

After the 16 week course of treatment the data was collected and the researchers found that circulating Testosterone decreased by – 25%, Androsterone Glucuronide by – 30% and the Androstane – 3α,17β-diol-3-glucuronide by −28% in the Electro Acupuncture group. They also found that menstrual frequency increased to 0.69/month from 0.28 at baseline and after the 16-week follow up, acne cores decreased by -32%.

After measuring the improvements in a wide range of endocrine variables the researchers concluded; both Electro Acupuncture and exercise improved menstrual frequency and decreased the levels of several sex steroids at week 16 and at the 16-wk follow-up compared with no intervention in women with PCOS. But Low-frequency Electro Acupuncture was superior to physical exercise and may be useful for treating hyperandrogenism and oligo/amenorrhea.
